Episode 12: “The Bubbles of First Love” Parts I & II
Before I begin the week’s summary, I’d like to get something off my chest real quick regarding Wiki’s translations for upcoming episode titles. I’ve been checking up on that page since the initial start of the series, and have come to depend on it when in need of some background info on certain characters. However, the translations for some of the titles have been loosely done and I’m beginning to wonder if those responsible are using Babelfish or a program similar to it. For example, they currently have today’s episode marked as, “A New Love of Soap Bubbles”. I’m thinking, “what the hell, I thought hatsukoi meant “first love”?” When you’re saying “new love”, you’re implying that there was a love previous to this one. So from now on, I’m going to go with my own translations, and relying only on a Japanese source, because I can’t deal with such inaccuracies. I wish someone would double check these so as to not make others look foolish when reporting new episode titles to others, haha! Okay, enough of that, onward to some important matters — that deal with our very own Miyako of course…
In the first half we’re introduced to a young boy on a rooftop of a pediatric facility named Takaaki, who happens to be struck by the notorious black light of monster da wanism while reminising about a promise he made in the past. We then switch scenes to where the Powerpuff Girls Z trio are in the middle of a confrontation with the always comical Mojo. After the battle ends, rain begins to pour and Miyako starts to lose herself in her own thoughts as she gazes over at a nearby playground. School begins, and Momoko learns of a secret that Miyako had kept from everyone all this time — she longs for the return of a special someone she once met when she was younger.
Here is where things start to get interesting. We already know Miyako is one of the most popular girls in her school, receiving love letters left and right from a countless number of male classmates. Yet she doesn’t really take the time to respond to them. Why? Well because she already has someone very dear to her — someone she made a promise with. Now it all starts to make sense right?
Back at the hospital, we’re given a look into the mind of Takaaki and his resentment of always being secluded from the rest of the world by such an institute because of his chronic illness. Pediatric depression no doubt. Switching scenes back to Utonium’s lab, we see Momoko running her big mouth as usual telling everyone of Miyako’s unrequited love secret. Of course, this only leads to everyone asking Miyako for details as to who this mysterious boy is, whom she met when she was 6 years old. Commence flashback sequence…

See, this is why Kaoru is such an awesome character. Look how she keeps her cool and not appear overly excited from hearing Miyako’s story
Must. Recuperate. Cuteness overload… Ahem, continuing from where I left off, we see young little Miyako and a couple of friends being bullied by three kids who wanted take away their spot to play soccer. Coming to the rescue of the girls is a young but ill Takaaki. The bullies retreat and the girls are then treated to a few neat bubble tricks performed by him. One such trick he calls “freedom”, where he blows an array of tiny bubbles into a huge one ready to depart. They are then set “free” as they are released into the air. As time passes, the other two girls begin to say their goodbyes, as well as Takaaki. Miyako however wants to meet up with him again tomorrow. Takaaki isn’t sure whether he can make it, but promises to meet again one day. The two do what Japanese kids are known to do, a yubikiri promise, and that was the last she saw of him.
In the second half we finally see the effects of the black light start to kick in. Takaaki transforms into his monster da wan form and runs wild in his hospital room; shattering doors, windows, and eventually finding himself outside where he begins to cause trouble for the innocent civilians of Tokyo. The girls transform themselves as well and try to calm the savage lion-beast, only to find they are too slow to keep up with his fast speed. During the fight, fallen debris can be seen everywhere, including a billboard sign that came awfully close to killing a nearby child. Luckily the beast rushed in the nick of time to save the kid. Bubbles then wondered why a monster would do such a thing. Later on the three found themselves in the same playground they were at earlier. Here they witnessed the beast blowing bubbles, minding his own business. Blossom and Buttercup saw this opportunity to take down the animal but was only stopped short of doing so because of Bubbles. She then extended her arms, pleading for the other two to stop attacking the beast. Bubbles then looked deep into the monster’s eyes and asked, “who are you really?” She realized that a kind-hearted person was somehow hidden behind this fury, since anyone who would be courageous enough to risk their own lives to save the life of a small child had to be. It was then where Bubbles figured out that it was indeed her special someone whom she waited for all these years:
The episode ends with Miyako staring at the sky knowing they’ll meet again, because it was a promise…
Many can agree, this is by far the best and most heart-warming episode in the series. I can only hope there will be more like it in the future. Certainly a big change from the usual silliness and slapstick we’re used to seeing. The animation designs weren’t half-bad either.
Opening single pre-order:

You are now seeing the cover artwork to the upcoming single from gosurori idol Nana Kitade titled “Kibo no Kakera”. The cd is expected to be released everywhere October 4th. As a way of getting everyone excited, I plan to share all my Nana Kitade promotional videos sometime next week. Be sure to look out for it! In the meantime, here’s a clip I recently found of the idol sending out a message to all her fans in the US:

Random Pics:
None this week. Except for a few that may be considered a little too risque for some viewers ;P

Did Bubbles say they’ll meet again or said that he’s now ‘free’ (in his monster form he needs no wheelchair and hospitals) like the soap bubbles?
Her exact words were “また何時かね…やくそくだよ” - (”we’ll meet again someday… I promise you”)
Arrr, lucky blonde guy. I swear, if I was in his skin…
Miyako lovers must still be taking out daggers from their hearts. Ouch.
Just seeing the screenshots at Futaba Channel inspired me for a quick picture yesterday, LOL. Cuteness overdrive, cute little Miyako!
It was about time she got a good looking episode, specially seeing how her quality was lowering exponentially in the lastest episodes as I complained before (even more than the rest):P and “mini-Miyako” has a natural +5 to hug value, incredibly cute.
Once again, thanks for all the work put in here!
PS: No randoms this week? Oh well…~
Yeah, good episode. I knew this show had this kind of potential, and it’s good to see the producers actually using it. Animation and art is also back to what it should be. I’m really looking forward to seeing new episodes again.
I wonder what Momoko eats for breakfast, because damn, that girl is energetic. And I guess I have to say something about how cute and adorable Miyako is in this episode, so here goes: OMG, BUBBLES IS SO CUTE! はう はう! お持ち帰り!
Too risque? Risque is good! Hey, hopefully this weeks episode will inspire artists to create a lot more Miyako fanart, because there seems to be a lack of that out there in the internets. Looking forward to next weeks “random pics” then. ;)
I like how they handled such an issue as chronical fatigue since they kept the mood serious and the funny parts were few, tasteful and not relevant to the main story.
The ending was of course predictable and corny, but still no forced happy ending (like the Seduca one) were all ends well for everyone. The boy remained a monster, wasn’t somehow cured from his illness, no romantic stuff were exchanged. Bubbles didn’t -really- meet him again and is both happy and sad about his new condition.
Quite bittersweet.
K so next is the Amoebas and then GGG, bring it.
@Kerg:
Well, if anyone else had the impulse to draw I had, count on plenty of fanart, harharhar (it’s hard to me to decide to draw something just like that, I never do it on impulse). Unfortunately, compared to the standards, I suck.
And about risque…in case of p0rns I guess he did well not showing, for possible public reactions (you know people can get very offended on that). It wouldn’t be fun to have like 300+ hate mails about some ero pics shown in your site. OR FBI ON YOUR DOOR (lol).
Those “risque” images I was referring to earlier are for my eyes and my eyes only, haha! I’m only kidding. I’ll put them up next week. It’s a promise.
Is that a yubikiri promise? ;)
Oh, and I realized the second part of the next episode seems to have a similar plot to the original powerpuff girls episode “Mime for a change”. So maybe we’ll get to hear the girls sing next week. ;) ~ラーブー メイクズ ザ ワルド ゴー ラウンド!~
Okay, maybe a bit farfetched.
Heart warming, serious, and bittersweet. By far the best episode in the entire series so far. You can tell the animators put a lot of effort into this episode and it all came together so well. Also, after listening to Miyako’s theme, I want the full version of it. They did such a good job with Miyako’s character in this episode. And as everyone else said, young Miyako is too adorable to ignore. I wonder why the animators chose Takaaki to transform into a lion-wolf creature with armor plating. Hmmm…
Oh and I’m not sure if anyone has seen this yet but…

Finally I did this PC wallpaper of Princess, I can modify it if someone want it in other composition. You can see it and download it here:

I saw the scans, and personally I hate Shojo style.
>Kerg - Mime for a change eh? My mind only vaguely recalls such an episode title of the original series. Can you maybe explain in some detail what that one was all about?
>Setsu - Thanks for the link. Actually I haven’t read the manga scans yet. Oh I’m sure Miyako’s theme will be on the soundtrack — whenever the hell that comes out. Sure enough I’ll buy it though.
>Neo Stryder - Yeah, I saw your wallpaper of Himeko already, when you first posted about it on the other PPGZ entry. I left you some comments there. Thanks again.
Mime for a Change was the episode where some clown gets bleached and turns into some villain called Mr. Mime (no relation to the pokemon), who’s power allowed him to turn everything black and white and everything would stop moving and be silent. It was all fixed when PPGs did their little musical number. It had the most controversial ending since the girls beat the crap out of the clown even though they knew he was no longer Mr. Mime.
And the villain in the next episode is not Mr. Mime. The title of the next episode is The Camera Monster’s Counterattack! You can see the villain in the final shot of the preview (the giant walking camera thing).
>PKjd - Thanks for the comment, I’m working in one with my favorite character of this show… MOMOKO (she reminds me a lot to me when I had her age). If someone wants one, I will do the possible to do it.
>Setsu - Would you by the way know where you can download or watch streaming video of the old PPG series? I would love to see it again.
>Neo Stryder - Momoko/Hyper Blossom definitely!
Btw, I have the title to episode #15:
Episode 15: “狙われたファッションショー!/男!ラーメンモンスター!”
Episode 15: “The Targeted Fashion Show! / A Man! Ramen Monster!”

Heh. Thanks for using the video I posted on youtube.

Ah the memories watching some of the PPG episodes.
“If I were a rhino I would STOMP STOPM STOMP!!!!”
@“If I were a rhino I would STOMP STOPM STOMP!!!!”
That episode was seriously the funniest, I could bearly hear it due to my own laughter.
Yes! Finally get to watch the movie. I’ve actually never seen it before. How weird is that? Thanks for the link by the way.
PS - With access to all these old episodes, I can maybe make use of them for future PPGZ coverage. We’ll see…
Cant wait for TVNihon to do the Subbed copy.
Oh man, I thought the PPGZ would change Takakii back, not let him run away.
And how did Miyako know that the monster was Takakii anyway? Weird.
poor blubbles, she has a crush with a monster.
My fave PPGZ couple ^_^
@ rollingbubbles
