出ましたっ!パワパフガールズZ – 35 「We’re Not Weeds!」/ 「Monster, The Laws of Compassion!」
Ep35 Commentary: *AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Reasons why this episode FAILED:
Speaking as a fan of the series, I cannot honestly recommend watching this week’s episode. It was the first time I had ever deleted a PPGZ raw from my hd just seconds after watching it — which proved to be a bad move considering I had not captured the screens yet. Anyway, you’re welcome to agree or disagree with anything you see here, just like with all our other weekly entries. But not even I could tolerate this kind of cheap material — the episode never held my attention once.
Ah, but I’m not leaving here on a bad note — that’s not my style. Next week’s may actually be based on, or should I say “loosly” based on — knowing how the writers work, the original Powerpuff Girls series episode, “Octi-Evil.” Many are definitely looking forward to this one!

Allright, I didn’t delete the raw from my HD, but unfortunately the best moments for me are:
1. Kare on the tropical beach with his laptop
2. uhhh…..
Jeez, only 41 screens, that’s gotta be an all-time low. I haven’t watched this one yet, but thanks for the heads-up, now I know not to expect anything as fantastic as 30, 32, or 34.
Oh, and who made the intro pic this week? It looks nice.
Why are they reusing the same type of monsters? If it is not some type of Fighting Foodon ripoff, it’s plants. And why the hell is Him relaxing on the beach instead of trying to destroy the PPGZ? If he is a powerful demon or something, couldn’t he move the Earth so it can make the entire perpetually planet warm? Or at least be more creative.
The next episode has to be better than this one.
Well… what to say? Other than “I agree”, that is. I didn’t expect much from this episode, since the preview for it hardly got me going, and the reactions to it over at 2chan mostly seemed to be “Wow, that sucked.” Reused animation sequences galore! I thought we didn’t need Musashi QUALITY animation in season 2?
The second part was slightly better than the first, and it also had potential. Who knew Tokyo City inhabited that many monsters? Sort of reminded me of the OPPG episode where Princess Morbucks bought the whole town and legalized crime (Bought and Scold). Too bad that potential never was fulfilled. At least the part where they tricked they Mayor/Ghost to eat a “Hot Dog” was a bit funny.
This time, the preview for the next episode was the best part for sure. I can comfortably say that sentence comfortably.
Actually, I kind of predicted that this episode wouldn’t go so well. But anyway, my predictions tell me that next week’s episode is going to be better.
And I think it would be EVEN BETTER when the RRBs and Takaaki make their season debut.
Phailure.
That YouTube thumbnail says it all.
Sort of bad indeed. Specially after last week’s episode. Wow, what an episode. Good times.
I look forward for next week’s episode though. If it has Miyako cuteness, I am in.
Loved the MUSASHI SEAL OF QUALITY, PKjd, by the way. Can I borrow it for my evil usage?
Man, you were right. This episode really does stink! I mean, another plant?! What’s the matter with them?! Well, maybe the next one will be better.
Fuzzy shouldn’t have been there; he doesn’t live in the city. If he was there, he should have regarded the other monsters as challengers and fought against them.
Continuity-wise, they have now established that the city’s monster population is measured in percentage points.
Any proper scientist would have cultivated the weeds to see if the supernatural traits are preserved in cuttings and descendents.
Kare isn’t trying to destroy the PPGZ because he doesn’t fear them; they aren’t considered a threat. He faced them down and they dared not attack; it’s now their turn to challenge Him, and he has no reason to acknowledge them until they do. His actions, I regard as appropriate.
-Galen
Well, I kept the show on my HD since I have plenty of space, and it’s my nature to keep it all, horrible or not.
Good points:
Actual weapon contact shown throughout.
Surprise appearence of Kare.
Bad points:
Pretty much everything else.
The next episode is going to be so good. I can feel it. I decided to go with creepy-looking Octi wallpaper in anticipation of the greatness.
Given the preview for next week now, I can see where all the setup has been done in the previous episodes (Penna and Goma) to establish Bubbles being friendly with inanimate objects of hers that come to life.
Episode 36 is definitely going to be one to watch I think.
I’m thinking that there is truth to the pattern of bad episode then good episode. I’m thinking that much of the effort taken when an episode is bad is given to the next episode.
Maybe I’m rationalizing, but I think that this episode was terrible because they were preoccupied. They wanted to make the next one super-special. And I hope that’s the case.
this episode is fucking piece of dogshit! they reusing same fuckin crap in first part plant monsters again are a pain in the fuckin ass. and i don’t like it.
…I’m skippin’ this episode. 14 screens, an all time low for the series. Possibly the worst episode in the series.
Wow, with all these bad comments, I’m really gonna skip this week’s episode..and from what I see here, it really sucks. >_>
Maybe they made this episode bad on purpose, so that a lot more people will expect to watch episode 36….it’s another plan for more PPGZ watchers.
You know, I want to see an episode where ALL the bad people(including HIM and RRB) will team up aganist the PPGZ, and the PPGZ will have some allies as well, like professor, his son, and maybe the 4th ppgz..?
One good point: Their weapons striking villains in the face. Oh and I approve of the dog-kick, the nastier a monster the better.
http://www.moetron.com/screencaps/powerpuff/caps009y/ppgz_tv0027.jpg Lumpkin cousins?
@ Raichu: Maybe it is the case.
Oh, and before I forget, there’s still no word on a U.S. release date!!!! AAAARRGGGHHHH!!!!! If it doesn’t show here, I’m gonna go crazy!!!!! I WILL!!
Phew, sorry about that.
@ volfera
I’m guessing that’s one of the Gangreen Gang disguised as Fuzzy.
@ Boinkity
I’d love to see this series brought here, though I have a bad feeling. That it’s taking so long to make an announcement tells me that our PPGZ is going to face localization. Localization most unwelcome.
Gee, I was gonna skip on watching this episode due to the bad reviews, but I’m glad I did. I didn’t think there was any more recycled animation as any other episodes. I always skip on the tranformation sequences and I know they always use similar animation for their attacks, but I thought most of the animation was original. Furthermore, the stories were pretty interesting.
In the first half, I felt sympathy for the girls as they reflected how they didn’t have time as normal girls to play or such and how they understood the feelings of the weeds as no one called them by name and just ignored or trampled on them. I thought it was funny that the models were so self centered and conceited that they refused to understand the feelings of the plants and just went into their own mistaken idea that they were assaulted because of their beauty. When the other women followed suit, we saw who the real monsters were.
In the second half, I thought it was interesting they used the ghost of 5th Tokugawa Shogun who passed the unpopular law revering dogs and cats. A little bit of history in an anime episode doesn’t hurt.
My advice is don’t skip out on this episode just from pics alone. Believe it or not, there is story in these episodes and the dialog and message is part of what makes it interesting.
Alright, I’ll agree with you on the history lesson there. But the overall presentation was still a complete snoozefest. As far as the first half is concerned, it’s just so corny and played out. Sorry but I’ve talked to other fans of the show and the majority of them agree. There are even PPGZ fanfics out there that are a lot more interesting and original.
@ Raichu: What does “localization” mean?
Maybe it’s time for Toei to do a little “revision”.
@wrex
Now that you mention that, it does seem a bit more interesting, but still not good enough to salvage it. Still watched it, still have it, will still see it when I get DVD 9.
@Boinkity
Changing a show or other media to appeal to the tastes of a foreign audience (e.g. Japanese to American).
Localization means adaptation of content to a certain culture. In the case of anime, it means taking out the cultural references for the edification of a foreign nation.
@wrex
I admit that the first part now sounds more interesting than some other filler episodes. Will see when the sub is out.
History lesson in the second part? links plz?
Of course you shouldn’t skip it. Maybe it’s just me, but I would never be able to skip an episode due to bad reviews. When I’m watching a series, I’ll watch ALL of it. While I agree on the first part having it’s share of interesting points, such as the girls wanting to be just normal girls from time to time, I think this has been the case with most episodes, even the worse ones. (Though this one could possibly be worst episode yet?)
Prior to this episode, the worst one in my opinion was the one with Penna and Gomma. A pretty interesting episode actually, because you could feel how the writer was trying desperately to justify the existence of the silliest monsters ever by mixing their story with some character development for Miyako. Unfortunately, it didn’t get further than “Miyako doesn’t like it when people fight!”, and the monsters stole the rest of the spotlight. Hence the episode on the whole failed miserably, similar to how ep. 35 failed mostly due the same reason. (Original Monster(s) mostly just being annoying throughout the whole episode.) Having horrible art and reusing animation doesn’t exactly make it better either…
I’m glad I won’t have admit the worst episode in this series is a Miyako-centered one anymore at least. Thank you, episode 35 for stealing that spot.
Alright, I’m calling for a full investigation on this. First off, anyone familiar with something called “What Not to Wear”, “How-to-Draw”, or “Cosmo Tutorial”? From what I understand, “How-to-Draw” and “Cosmo Tutorial” are specials being played on Nickelodeon. Anyway, I’m sure you’ve all heard the remix floating around of the Momoko’s “henshin” theme right? If not, take a look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zK_ZutRn1Qg
According to some fans, that same music is being used on American television — commercials for the specials I just mentioned. Actually it’s been in use for a couple of months now from what I hear. I’d appreciate any explanation to this bizarre mystery. All I know is that the majority of the show’s soundtrack is produced by Taichi Master. I’d hate to think Momo’s ‘henshin’ theme wasn’t originally made by him. Or if his recording company sold the rights to his music overseas.
If it’s any consolation, the second part did appear to be loosely based on the PPG Episode where crime was made legal.
But yeah, how many Buttercup hammer swings do you need. XD
btw can anyone tell what it’s said in the preview?
When did Him learn how to use computer?
Why did he spent time taking vacationbut not burning other cities?
Guess he’s only interested in Tokyo City- he appears to be it’s local malevolent god/demon.
@pKjd
That sounds so familiar, now that I hear it. I have a feeling that I heard this somewhere. Where, I don’t know. I’m sure it’s nothing too wrong going on.
Kare isn’t using a computer on the beach, that’s a DVD player. You notice that there is a DVD lid where the keyboard normally is.
You can find portable DVD players with their own display screen in places like Circuit City and Sears. One person I know takes his everywhere.
I was also told that the music being played in episode 34 — where the girls are fast asleep in the end — is also used for a “How-to-Draw-Cozmo” clip on Nickelodeon. From what I hear, the music is exactly the same — no remixes.

Okaaaaaaay. That’s sort of enough.
Aww, I’ll give you something to make you feel better. But first, I’m going to watch this episode anyway once the sub comes out. You can’t get me miss any Nakao Ryuusei.
So, I was away for the weekend, and my sisters got really bored at home. They started playing around with Windows Movie Maker. First, they attached the PPGZ second opening animation to the opening theme of Saint Seiya, Pegasus Fantasy, and it was funny – although it didn’t occur to them to use the raw opening… -_-; Then, they got a stupid idea and made a proper PPGZ music video. Sorry for the quality, the program messed it up… Well, I hope you’ll get the joke. x) Anyway, to the point.

Do ya think the images I found would get into the Random Gallery?
New episode titles revealed:
Episode 37 – “Burst-out Comic Monster!” / “Girls, Day Off!” (March 17)
Episode 38 – “We are トリマキーズ!” – Parts 1&2 [*not sure about this one. I know it doesn't translate to "Trimmer Keys" so it may be slang I'm guessing. Or it may be in relation with the word "torimaki" (followers)] (March 24)
Episode 39 – “Little Ken’s Big Request!” / “Girls, Flight Ban!” (March 31)
Episode 40 – “Girls, TV, and a Gift?!” – Parts 1&2 (April 07)
Source: Newtype
“Burst-out Comic Monster” reminds me of the “Super Zeroes” episode, perhaps because they got the idea for their costumes from comics? (Strange point: Bubbles was the otaku in OPPG, she had a manga in Japanese) “Girls, Day Off” sounds appealing to me for some reason. I like this show when it takes a break from being serious.
Episode 38, I wish I knew what it’s name meant. “Girls, Flight Ban” sounds like a throwback to the OPPG episode where the girls moved to Citysville, and their powers were outlawed because of the damage their powers cause there.
Perhaps we’ll be seeing the girls’ “Super Zeroes” costumes soon?
@ Raichu: I think it seems likely that the “Super Zeroes” costumes may be shown in Episode 37.
But, one question, in Episode 36, will the Powerpuff Girls Z really break up or just get in a fight like in Episode 18?
They will obviously break up for good, and Ken will have to go out on a search to shot strange white chemical z beams on a new trio of girls. Wait… that didn’t come out right…
But yeah, the Day off-episode could be fun. Agree with Raichu on the appeal in more laid-back episodes. Such as episode 34!
I somehow doubt they will ever appear in the “Super Zeroes” costumes. I think that part of the opening is mostly for eye candy. Then again, I could totally see Momoko gladly putting on a hero costume… Miyako can’t say no to a bunny suit (as it is cute), and, though Kaoru would obviously object to putting her Mange costume on, that won’t really matter since Miyako will encourage her with a “I think it would fit you ~desu wa.” And so, Mange Z is born. (But not without a “しょうがねえな”)
Ehh, yeah. I don’t have the episode titles in full Japanese, so I might be completely off, but couldn’t the “Trimmer keys” be a name? Torimakiis… Well, you know foreigners. They all have strange names. Even so, I guess there should be a pun in there somewhere… Would be a pretty lame episode title otherwise. :-/
@Kerg: here you go:
38話 ふたりはトリマキーズ! その1/その2
Maybe it is a name.
The title isn’t up at http://cal.syoboi.jp/tid/940/time,
but the schedule through ep 52 is, and 52 *doesn’t* have the “final” mark next to it!
-Galen
Does that mean that there will be more episodes to come?
No wonder there are no main plots arising yet, and also no RRB and Takaaki.
I seriously hope we see the Super Zeros costumes in the series. As well as the Dynamo, Power Prof., and that Mojinger Z robo. They’re too perfect to leave them in the opening. And Kaoru as Mage is love.
Two quick things…
1.) “トリマキーズ” is in fact related to the noun “torimaki” — so for now I’m calling episode 38: “We are the Henchmen!” (I’ll have everything better organized on the next PPGZ coverage entry.)
2.) Himeko will be featured in that episode!! fufufu~
….
In the original PPG, there was an episode where Princess tried to lead the RRB. Do you suppose episode 38 is the remake of that?
-Galen
@Galen
I wouldn’t get your hopes up. Remember “Hana, Hana, Hana”? Could be the same thing. In fact, I think “Trimmerkeys” is very likely.
I asked my Japanese teacher and she has confirmed that no such official word exists. On that note, it could be “torimaki” pluralized (add an “s”), thus making it as such.
episodes 29 and 34 are out, with 34 being from new people.
I would be thinking another villian alliance where come villians(possibly Mojo, GGG, RRB or even Fuzzy) working for Princess just for the money.
@Galen
Do you know who did 34? I would like to see their work. (If it’s who I think it is, I’ll slap myself.)
@ Umandsf: Who do you think did #34?
Are you seriously asking me or are you trying to tell me it’s really who I think it is?
episode 29 has been recalled.
Episode 34 – ToTheZ
@Galen: From what I hear, episode 38 has something to do with Himeko and her friends, Fumiko and Hanayo having a big fight. So I don’t know about the RRB appearing. Then again, I wonder why it’s a two-parter.
@pKjd,
Himeko ain’t good at apologizing; maybe after the big fight, the girls try to keep Himeko from going Princess by pretending to be replacement friends? And after that proves difficult, they have to resolve the quarrel?
-Galen
@Galen
Really? No wonder everyone’s torrent stopped at 92.0%. Any reason why it was recalled?
Wait. I almost forgot. [slaps self three times]
@pKjd
You make it seem like an interesting episode. Let’s hope it is.
@Galen: Maybe so. But now that we know it’s about Himeko and her friends, should we re-title the episode? “Torimaki” would translate to something like underling/subordinate/henchmen. Should we just leave it as, “We are the Henchmen!” or come up with another word for “henchmen”?
@pKjd,
Himeko’s current friends are “cohorts”; if the Puffs replace them,
however, they would do so as “sidekicks”. It depends on who “We” refers to in the title. (Cohorts have a mutual trust with their leader, whereas sidekicks exist to be exploited.)
-Galen
Gotcha. I think a name change is in order anyway.

The preview for episode 37…
…what happened at the end…
…I know how badly you want to say it. Because I do too. But I can’t spoil it for anyone. Still, that’s so freakin’ sweet!
Thanks for not spoiling Raichu… really looking forward to seeing the episode now. :)
Just watched [ToTheZ]‘s ep. 34. Jeez. So much better than T-N. Clean opening without silly karaoke and “credits”. Great translation overall. The shishiodoshi-thing might have needed a translator’s note and I don’t like it when stuff like “itadakimasu” is left untranslated (everyone does that!). I also don’t understand why the next episode preview was left untranslated, but still, far superior to T-N. Good choice of font and font size too. Hopefully, we’ll see more of them in the future.
I saw it too. Nice translation. About episode 37, thanks for the preview. Although I think I rather see the second half about the new Powerprof than the first half.
Once again, bringing you the HQ Raws ;P

*Builds a magnificent shrine dedicated to pKjd worship.*
@Kerg
To explain your two complaints:
Shishiodoshi is a water-filled bamboo tube which clacks against a stone when emptied. It is used to scare birds away from gardens.
“Itadakimasu” has no literal translation, thus it is left in its original form. It is used as a sign of grace before the beginning of a meal.
I was planning on taking To the Z! subbed episodes and providing them with a revised script that fixes anything sentence structure and grammar errors. I’ll do that when I have time.
@Asia Fan
You didn’t just say what I thought I saw you say, did you? (Spoilers! Whaaa! [runs away crying]) Not accusing you of anything, so don’t get mad at me.
“Itadakimasu” means “I am about to receive”, which Umandsf correctly explained as a prayer at the beginning of a meal. It’s not to be mistaken for “ittekimasu”, which means “I’m leaving and soon shall return”, which is used when someone is leaving their home, office, etc.
@Asia Fan
Thanks a lot. (sarcasm)
@pKjd
Thanks a lot! (sincerity)
Episode 36 made me fall in love with this series some more. Excellent episode. Thank you for sharing this. And I knew that Octi couldn’t be trusted.
@Umandsf
I know what a shishiodoshi is, and I know what itadakimasu means. I was saying the shishiodoshi thing should have been explained in the episode, since there are people out there who don’t know. And as for “itadakimasu”; it doesn’t matter if a literal translation won’t work, as a translators job never is to translate literally anyway. “Let’s eat!”, “Let’s dig in!”, “Eat it while it’s hot!”, whatever. There should be some way to translate the intention and not the meaning behind the words. These are merely my opinions though. The original translator should naturally do whatever he/she thinks is appropriate. I just feel that “translating” by typing out the word in roman letters is like… Well. You get my point.
I’m guessing that since you wrote “episodes” in plural, we can look forward to more releases from them (you?). That’s good. This series could use some competition on the sub side.
Oh, this reply could use some smileys to lighten up the tone and make it seem less insulted and serious. Well, you can get a few at the end to make up for it, because I don’t have the time to read it through again and insert them at appropriate places. :) :) ;)
(Watched ep. 36. One word: yay!)
I didn’t know what a shishiodoshi is. Thanks for the info.
:)
Episode 29 has once again escaped into the wild.
-Galen
I haven’t seen Episode 36 yet, but I know it’ll be good.
@Boinkity:
You don’t even know how good it is. It is beyond good.
@Kerg
If the subbing moderators will allow me to make changes, I’ll make sure that they add a note at the top of the scene to inform others, because I had no idea what it was until today.
@Preview
o.O
Episode 36 was by far the best episode I seen so far. It even match up to episode 12 and 20.
Still I hope there is at least a Manga PPGZ vs PPGZ scene to make episode 37 a lot more interesting.
And one more thing, did I do anything wrong or something that made you guys feel uncomfortable?
If there is then I am very sorry about it.
Um guys, I don’t know where I can actually view Episode 36. Why do you think I haven’t seen it yet?!!
@ Kerg: What about Karaoke openings don’t you like? They tell you what the song is saying. And it’s only natural that they credit the people involved in subbing, don’t know why you have a problem with that. Fontwise, no comments, cause I haven’t actually watched that yet, and don’t intend to until TVN releases 30-33. Which reminds me, I still need to work on a splash screen for that one.
In regards to translating or not translating some stuff, while this is just my opinion, it makes sense to me. I don’t like it when things are “overtranslated”, leaving off honorifics and other subtleties found in the Japanese language. So when “Itadakimasu” is translated, I think it sort of takes away from the feel, because nothing that people translate it into can really express its meaning and use. So I think it’s better to just leave it as “itadakimasu” and give a little explanation of it rather than try and translate it into something it’s not.
@ Asia Fan: The reason they’re annoyed at you is because you spoiled the episode 37 preview which they didn’t want to see yet.
@ Boinkity: Look at comment 73.
@ Drago: Ooooohhhhhhh.
@Drago11: Guess it’s a matter of taste. I don’t like what I see as unnecessary karaoke effects. Sure, translating the lyrics is fine, prefered in most cases even. (Though the lyrics in the newer PPGZ OP hardly needs to be translated…) However, not with huge bouncing letters in different colors that take up 50% of the screen. And there’s no need to put it in Japanese, Japanese with Japanese characters, English, Korean, Chinese, Swahili etc. etc. at the same time. (Note: humorous exaggeration!) As for credits, I don’t really see the point. But if for some reason, it has to be in there, putting them in the eye catch like [ToTheZ] did is a great idea. I mean, openings and endings are usually already full of text (original credits and karaoke), so… the cleaner the better.
And about the translation; I guess it’s a matter of style. Sure, there might not be a way to express the exact same thing in English, but that’s when you use something similar, or something that simply fits into the context. If you’d decide to always not translate something because you can’t find a precisely fitting word for it in the language you’re translating to, the result would be that it would not be a translation at all, but you would have simply written down the dialog in the original language. I’m tired of seeing stuff like “Oh you baka! (Translators note: Baka means idiot in Japanese!!!)”
So, I finally got around to watching DVD volume 3, and I notice that it’s Blossom who directs the defeat of Michael by using hair care products. But didn’t Bubbles already have a glue bubble attack? Maybe it should be stronger. Episode idea: Bubbles and Ken try to power-up her glue bubble attack; as a result, Blossom gets stuck to Mojo, Bubbles gets stuck to Buttercup, and Ken gets stuck to the Professor.
-Galen
Is that the reason? I didn’t know that I can spoil that much since I only give my personal idea about it.
Anyway, sorry for spoiling it to everyone.
I’m bad about that myself; but yes, simply revealing the appearance of an unexpected character in the preview denies other observers the thrill of being surprised when they see it for the first time themselves. Like Peach’s mastadon-sized “spare” body that he uses in episode 66 – no one has mentioned that yet, and most people wouldn’t because it’s a spoiler.
-Galen
o_O
Well, I’m looking forward to episode 66.
@Kerg: Well, really I’ve never found that the karaoke and credits get in the way too much, but whatever. I do think they’re a bit too colorful on the second opening, though. Still, as one who has depended on TVN for the last year and a half, I’m grateful for their work. Without them, I would not have had any exposure to tokusatsu, Jdramas, and some anime nobody else subs. I think they keep a fair balance of translation and untranslated cultural stuff. Attacks, catchphrases, and techniques (prime example: ninjutsu in Naruto) are stuff that I think is good to leave untranslated and offer an explanation of a few times. But whatever floats your boat.
@ Galen: XD. Peach’s new body indeed.

“File temporaily unavailable” Great…
PKjd? could you pretty please upload this to sendspace?
Drago11: I’m glad we can agree on not agreeing. :) My criticism was not directly directed towards [T-N] (although I feel they do deserve some of it) but the subbing community as a whole. I too am grateful for [T-N]‘s work, and for them picking up PPGZ. Although I can grasp most of what is said without their subs, I think it’s great someone tries to do something for all of those who can’t. This doesn’t mean I don’t think their translations are full of silly mistakes, though. (Not talking about stuff like translating/not translating itadakimasu and such here; outright errors.) They’re not that bad, this is just me being a perfectionist. You can watch one of their episodes and you’ll understand what the characters are saying and what’s going on, for the most part. And that’s always something, right? ;)
Yeah, I’m another one of those people that freaks out when they use “their” where it should be “they’re” and do stuff like “a 100″, “most cutest”, etc. But I’ve learned the hard way that in that respect it’s better to keep my mouth shut and enjoy the episode or I’ll get blasted by the ops (although I understand where they’re coming from).
Can I get your email? I wanna talk to you, but we’re getting off topic here.
Sure, you can try mailing me at mokuhazushi22 at yahoo dot com. Be warned though, I always forget to check my mail, (true for my irl mailbox as well!) sometimes it takes weeks before I remember to log in. :-/ Trying to get better at that…
Dear pKjd:
Thanks for the very informative review and particularly for the screencaps. As an animation art collector, I recently bought two lots of sketches from this episode. Your review helped me put them into context, and I was able to mate quite a few of your screencaps with images I got. I used them on my animation art gallery (not directly linked to this site, but using resized images saved to my Photobucket site), giving credit to you and a link back to this blog. I hope this is OK. You can check out the sketches at my “We’re Not Weeds!” Gallery.
I agree that the plots of the episodes are not very complex, but there’s no question that the animators at Toei studio had great fun creating the visual part of the show.
Those are some awesome sketches you have. I’ve seen a few listed on YAJ but it was always way out of my price range — would’ve loved to have one with the Princess :P … If it’s not too much trouble, I’d like to feature your collection on the next ppgz review. Let me know. Thanks!
Sure, pKjd, feel free to review it. Prices can go high: I’ve lost some over 10,000 yen (about $85). But generally they top off around $50, which comes to about $1 per sketch. Yes, there are usually a bunch of partial or crude rough drafts, but the jobbers always include enough really interesting ones to make the price a fair one. Certainly they’re more worth collecting than sketches from Bleach, Hikaru no Go, or Rozen Maiden, which go for a lot more than PPGZ art. Thanks again for a strong web resource.
Let's talk about the first part of the episode:
The girls are in a make-up Mathematics lesson. As the girls finish the lesson, their belts sound for a short time then disappear. The girls want to play with other students rather than being Powerpuff Girls Z all the time and want to become her with their ordinary names. Yeah! I would like to call the girls normal name if they have not yet transformed or after de-transform and the Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup for the girls after transform. I want to play with the girls with and called them ordinary names. The models think they are so beautiful and want the Grass monsters to attack them. That makes Bubbles angry. How come the models will have such a stupid thinking? At the end of that part, the girls put the weeds back to the park and call them real names.
Let's shift from the first part of the episode to the second part of the episode:
Kare use a laptop computer to watch a Jidaigeki about Tokugawa Tsunayoshi who had compassion with the dogs while he is relaxing on a tropical island. He blows his black powder to wake the ghost of Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. The ghost enters the Mayor’s body and I think the Mayor dresses like a samurai. The plot is similar to the OPPG episode named “Bought and Scold” where Princess Morebucks buys the City Of Townsville and makes crime legal. But this plot is the Mayor uses the Monster, Laws of Compassion to make the monsters to commit crimes. At the end of that part, Buttercup gives a hot dog to mayor and the ghost leaves the Mayor’s body. The girls use yo-yo attack, Balloon Catcher and Swing Sonic to whack the ghost away. On the other hand, Kare is still relaxing on the island.
To summarize the episode, I think the episode is a bit better than episode 7 but worse than episode 2. I will rate this episode 3.5/10 stars.

What I don’t get (other than how we can have such an idiot for a president) is why would the Muslims even want this??? They have to know that it will only breed more anger towards them. The good news is this may be the straw that breaks the camels back to bring the U.S.A. back to a true United Country. I do feel so sorry for the poor souls that lost loved ones in 911, what a total slap in their face. I’m sorry.
