Well. I had to drop the bomb sometime.
I am starting a small game project, based on a favorite of mine, “Wild Guns” for SNES. The game features Touhou characters in a robot-powered Western environment.
The game is mostly comedy. The main characters, as seen in the image, are my beloved Night Sparrow, Mystia Lorelei, and my “fantasy me”, Abe.
Here’s the rough plot:
A rare metal named orichalcum, capable of being shaped with magic, and that can turn living beings into a non-organic machine race, the Choujin (kind of borrowing a bit from my original lore), was found. Pursuing the rare metal, a large installment was set in the western regions of Gensokyo, as technology flourished. Soon everyone started to live in a way close to the human world’s Far West.
Soon enough the trade of orichalcum became the most important activity, and of course this attracted bandits that wanted the power it could bring, or the cash it could sell for. Justice had to be enforced. By lead.
Here’s some of the plan:
* Charge shot (used by mashing the shot button): Mystia has a power spread shot, Abe has a poison stun shot.
* Power shot (killing enemies in chains increase the power gauge): Mystia has a full-screen stun, Abe will generate a barrier that can resist a certain amount of damage before dissapearing.
* Special (obtaining a specific item): Mystia will blind enemies, making them miss their aimed shots; Abe will transform for additional power during a short time (two forms).
Both characters can collect an “option” item that will add extra firepower.

Yes, I know the marysue self-insert is there, but this is just intended as a comedy thing, for the fun. Plus, it’s a team-up with Mystia.
From pKjd:
I’ll help end this with some past Mystia artwork from Hetdegon himself…

Fixed the gallery so it’s in descending order from present to past…
Wow, I really liked that game also. My friend and I use to play that game together all of the time. Even my sister played that game with me.
Sounds interesting. Definitely want to try it out when it’s ready.
Nice. I think the other character should be Wriggle, though.
this looks promising..
Wow, good luck!
I did an OpenGL/SDL-based 2D sidescroller back in my college days - I always liked the platform. In particular, if you use all floats for your math and LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR for your texture rendering, you get absolutely butter-smooth graphics - you can put all kinds of transparencies and antialiased edges on your sprites and you get a game that looks wonderfully crisp and polished.
Lua I’m less partial to (the loose type-checking is very bad IMHO), but good cooperative multitasking is really a big win for classic 2D games, and I don’t know any other widely available language that handles them well. Every game I’ve ever worked on used a homebrew scripting language.
How are you planning on handling animation? In my experience, that tends to turn into the showstopper on spare-time game projects. You can write the bare bones of a poor-mans-Odin-Sphere skeletal animation system in a week or two, but it really takes a scary amount of art time to get something that looks both polished and varied.
Now where’s the demo? XD
And I really liked the artwork from the main characters.
Is Mystia supposed to be so cute?
I’m playing this one on general principle.
The idea sounds awesome. Can’t wait to see a demo when you bring it out :).
