Hmm, it has been awhile since I posted anything PPGZ-related. But after hearing the English dub that premiered on Cartoon Network Philippines, I was left in disbelief and needed to share. Names were changed, music was dropped, all around strange, however, I’m not sure if this is the same dub that will be shown in the west. Video after the jump…
[UPDATE: 05/19/08] - According to the original source of the ep, this is the same version (Ocean Group) that we’ll be seeing in the U.S. soon — as it is stated in the ending credits…
[UPDATE: 05/20/08] - xXHyperBlossomXx of “TotheZ” forums has discovered that post-production dubbing for the show is from Voiceovers Unlimited (Singapore) Pte. Ltd.
With all these conflicting reports coming in, it’s hard to confirm anything as of yet. Stay tuned…

Is it just me, or did that kinda suck?
Then again, I seem to recall episode 1 kinda sucked in Japanese, too, it got better later.
If you thought episode 1 was bad, this is at least ten times worst. However, I’m fairly confident this is not our version. It just can’t be. Even a domestic company that shall not be named wouldn’t do this poor of a job.
yeah, really. I mean, saying their names at both the begining and end of the transformation with nothing else in between was just silly. :)
My brain had exploded by the opening. And then I heard the voices. I’m in a daze it was incredibly different. But I’ll try to stay open as long as my stomach will hold.
The voices were a little different than I imagined, but that’s okay. They sounded a lot like the OPPG. The voices for many of the characters may have been mismatched, but I found the translated dialog enjoyable. I think I can enjoy this show as they continue to work on it, and hopefully make improvements where needed.
It’s been so long since I’ve last seen Momoko in action, I’d almost forgotten how cute she is. (-^_^-)
I don’t have much of a problem with the voices. Although, Mojo Jojo sounded a bit weird. Seems as though some tried copying the original English voices. Unfortunate about the changes though.
Well, I guess changes will happen when anyone other than the real anime license-holders gets their hands on anime.
Well, that felt…weird.
I stopped watching after Peach started talking. It was just like…aaaaah. DX
I wanted to barf after hearing some of the voices. And that’s Me being nice!
props to Mojo sounding like OPPG Mojo!
but seriously this dub should not be shown in the USA, we should get a better dub with the actual OPPG voices rather than the cheap sound-alikes!
no just no what have they done with the voices and what have they done with the intro and what have they done with the transformation songs aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah(faints)
I concur. The original openings were part of what made the JP versions great. You actually looked forward to them. Now they sound like some derivative of Dragonball Z, which isn’t outside the spirit of the original openings, considering that they did parody some classic anime. Also, the music in PPGZ is incredible.
I think they went out of their way to make the voices match the OPPG with the intention of pleasing those who wanted to hear something close to the classic Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup. I was looking forward to something that sounded more like middle-schoolers, but this is probably for the best. May as well please the majority, and not some obscure fraction of it’s base.
I’m slightly disappointed with the transition, but I’m still pleased overall. I hope this means that it will be broadcast in America soon.
they should know that we wanted the “Actual” OPPG vas! still the ocean group Vas did a good job especially Mojo Jojo’s VA!
seriously I couldn’t tell the difference between OMojo and PPGZDUB!Mojo
Man, it bugs me when licensing companies are too cheap to use the proper music. (It doesn’t happen that often, but still. :/)
I couldn’t bring myself to get past the first episode of PPGZ, but from reading these comments it seems like it gets better later on, so maybe I’ll try picking it up again.
Ok I watched the clip and…. THIS IS WHAT I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR FOR 2 WEEKS?! This sucks I know that the american dub could do SO much better than this. This is worse then when DIC dubbed the first season of Sailor Moon O_O I am shocked and disgusted. I kinda like Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercups voices but everything else is just horror. Truly and complete HORROR I TELL YOU I’d rather watch the Lucky star dub than waste my time on this. This completely sucked and I’m not wasting my time on this dub.
Btw
they’re gonna actually air this here in the US?! If they do AT LEAST they can change Kaoru’s voice now that I’ve re-watched the clip it doesen’t sound like the Kaoru we know and love If not they might as well forget about airing it here in the US at all!!
…rats. Maybe FUNimation should’ve gotten their hands on this.
*Awaits uncut DVDs*
Oh man. I haven’t even watched the clip yet, and after hearing all the comments from the rest of you, now I’m AFRAID to watch it!! By the way, should I watch it or not?
I’m not sure what most of you were expecting… This is the detested and universally repudiated episode 1, after all.
i was thrilled when CN Phils announced the broadcast of PPGZ and looking forward to it but i was immediately turned off when they’ve removed almost everything like the music (especially the henshin sequence) and the names >.>
they do however retained the Nana Kitade music but they’ve made it into a ED @@
Okay, I’ve watched it and here’s what I thought:
Ah, it was alright. But they coulda done better.
Where can i watch the clips? I think ppgz is better in tagalog dub
My precious PPGZ…ruined…my awesome Buttercup…slaughtered…WHAT HAVE THEY DONE! They might as well have given this series to 4Kids for all the effort they put into preserving it.
@ Drago11: Aw, come on, man! I bet you’d say the same thing if 4Kids HAD gotten their hands on it! And if they did, it would be even worse! Besides, this is only Episode 1! It’ll get better, trust me!
Well of course I’d say the same things if 4Kids had done it, because this is about their level of work. Even though we expect it from them doesn’t mean we like it any more when they do it. *sigh* I’ll never forgive them for doing this to Kaoru. I kind of expected Momoko and Miyako to sound how they do, but Kaoru…
I can only hope it gets better.
Ouch….I just watched the dub here. I know a lot of you didn’t like the original Japanese version of episode 1, but I did.
Even *I* thought this was bad! C’mon!
The Mayor and Miss Bellum, and Mojo Jojo’s voices, were well done; Mojo’s seemed (near-) identical to the OPPG!Mojo’s voice, so kudos on that.
But everyone else just sounded wrong. Miyako/Bubs was way too high pitched for a junior-high student, and Kaoru/BC didn’t sound tomboyish enough. And wtf was up with Professor U’s voice? He sounded younger than Ken! O_O -_- O_O
I stopped watching when Peach (what’s his new name? I couldn’t make it out on the audio) spoke up; he sounded totally wrong too. They should’ve rehired the voices from the OPPG series (except for Peach, who has no OPPG equivalent; but still, they could’ve matched the voice a bit better!).
Holy crap…Kaoru’s voice scared the hell out of me. And Miyako sounds like a 2 year old that knows “big words”. Momoko needs the OPPG actor, I can imagine that voice with her, but maybe it could sound a little older (the OPPG voice I mean). The rest of the PPGZs need thier OPPG voices (But like I said, slightly older). Dang, this dub sucks. I’m going to stay with fan-made dubs/Jap. with english subs. I just…no! I can’t take this little cutesy screw-up of one of my favorite Animes!
OMG NOOOOOOOOOO! They messed up their voices and they sound like the dubbed doremi charatcters!
hi……………………………………………………………..
Okay, upon actually watching the dub as apposed to jumping on the bandwagon, all I can say is this…
Ken wasn’t bad, I always imagined him with a voice like that. The Girlz were alright, a lot like the original. Could do without Buttercup’s constant usage of baseball puns, though. It’s a HAMMER not a BAT. “Poochie” wasn’t as bad as they say, though I always imagined him with Haro’s voice at first. I suspect the name change was a mistranslation, as they got Ken’s name right. They might confuse “Ace” with “S”, or “Lady” with “Red”. Mojo lost his “end all my sentances with mojo” gag, but he sounds more like the Mojo we know, so it’s not that bad, mojo. The rest were all pretty good.
The music was kinda fitting, but I do miss the original. Sometimes you just can’t win.
The script was a little off at times. The ending was the most changed of them all, which was a downer. As before, the baseball puns weren’t really needed. I did like Mojo’s lines, though, mojo. They really got the feeling of the original across, mojo. That is, they were able to capture the spirit, that is, the likeness, the image, of the intial version of Mojo, which is to say, the one from the original series, the first version to appear, in that manner, mojo. (How’s that for style mixing?) Not entirely sure about “Z-Rays”, though.
I had to skip the intro, and I rarely do that. V_V
Sooo…it’s just like any other anime series. The dub’s not bad, but the japanese is better. ^_^
Reccomended voices for the future:
Fuzzy-Not sure. Who’s the guy who did Fire Man in Megaman Powered Up?
Kuriko-Who did Roll in Upon a Star? If she doesn’t work, Caitlynne Mederek will do.
Ameoba Boys-Not sure on this one, either. Who can do them well? (If FUNi had been dubbing this, Brice Armstrong would’ve worked perfectly on at least one of them.)
Him/Kare-Pauline Newstone or Linda Young! Jk, lol. (props to anyone who gets that one!) Ted Cole, actually.
Michael-Paul Dobson, or anyone else who can sound like a “prettyboy”.
In closing, I’ll still wait for the Uncut DVDs. They have to put them out. Ocean does listen to its fans.
@Darkton: Are you saying you found a copy of the full first episode somewhere? If so, please share, the clip we have truly isn’t enough to make a final judgment on.
@Drago11
No, I’m making an estimate based off of this copy. This technically is the “full first episode”, if you count that as the first segment of Episode 1. I was able to pay attention to it enough to make my review. I’d say give this series some time. It’s obvious they’re trying to market it to children, but it’s not that bad.
Still, I will wait for the series to be released without any inevitable edits in the future.
*wonders if anyone paid attention to my reccomended cast listings and has anything to say about it*
I agree that it’s not completely terrible, but whatever.
I don’t think Poochie is a mistranslation, I think they’re changing his name.
Paul Dobson as Michel…scary thought. I don’t know any of the other VAs you listed.
@Drago11
Okay…I mainly know Paul as Zarbon…maybe it was a bad idea?
I was going to say Chris Sabat (Ayame, FUNi Zarbon), but he would probably end up voicing every other person, as usual, so maybe not.
Look up some of the other guys online, and while you can, find out the characters whose VAs I forgot and find out who they are.
I can be sure of only one thing…like the series, it will get better.
i dont no what ur all complaining about i found the voices actally really good, peaches voice wasnt too bad the transformation music was kinda lame but bits of the music was actually pretty good like when there flying threw the air or at the bigining when the prof and ken were talking, i acutally really liked kens voice they got him spot on and mojo’s was great too most of it was very good i recon the first episode wasnt that good to begin with in the jap ver anyway so dont get to disapointed it’ll get better, i liked the ppgz voices and that kindergarden teacher was also very well voiced also. it wasnt to bad but it may not be for the west as it does say ppgz dub philippines so it say be just for them im not sure but anway i thought it was pretty good.^^
It’s long since been confirmed that this is the version that will be airing in the US.
@nanoha44
I’m in 100% agreement with you. ’sides, I don’t get irked as much when anime dubs make a few small changes. After all, I have just goten finished watching some of FUNimation’s dub of DBZ…World’s Strongest to be exact. I don’t mind the changes that much, and, like you, I always imagined Mojo and Ken with the voices they have. Still, even if this version is the one airing in the US, I wouldn’t watch it on tv…I’d wait for the inevitable unedited release! ^_^
BTW, Worlds Strongest is of my 3 Favorite DBZ films. Dr. Wheelo is certainly one of the better villains of DBZ (despite looking like he came out of Macross and mirroring Vegeta’s actions in the Saiyan Saga slightly.) That, and it really expands upon the relationship between Piccolo and Gohan. My other two favorites are Tree of Might/Decisive Battle For the Whole World (For giving Yamcha, Tien and Krillin as equal a fighting chance as the Saiyans have in later movies, and for having a villain who does not have an overtly complex transformation) and Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan/Burn Up! Close Fight, Intense Fight, Super Violent Fight (for being an absolute BRAWL, for having an underling who surpasses the main villain, and for having said underling who becomes main villain act like a Saiyan version of Freeza, who happens to be one of my favorites).
(Yes the above statement is a shameless plug. Guess what…I DON’T CARE!)
Hi. I’m one of the members of cartoon network. This movie is cool, you know? my cousin is one of the editors of that movie. if you ever want to ask questions, my e-mail address is ppg_bubbles@cartoonnetwork.com.ph. my name? oh sorry but i can’t say my name in public. okay, let’s just say i’ll hide mine in the name Jerry. ok thats already a clue to you, since JERRY is close to my name. don’t try to guess, but if you guess it & you are correct, well i dont have to worry about it - already posted.
OKAY. i’ll just tell you my name. why? i don’t even have to be shy of it, right? ok. my WHOLE name is Jeremiah Andrews R. Lopez. i’m just new to Cartoon Network, so i don’t know too much about it. The reason i joined is because my cousin asked me to join, & he’s joining too. I don’t need to worry because he’s there.
I should tell you, it’s a VERY bad idea to reveal your full name over the internet in a non-professional situation. Also, you seem to not understand what this series is. It’s not a movie, it’s a TV show. Specifically, a magical girl anime series based on the Powerpuff Girls. What are you trying to prove? There’s no reason to be defensive here, we’re all fans and we won’t attack you.
@Drago11
Well, some of us may attack him based on how they feel about the dub. Do you know how much flame FUNimation gets over DBZ at Daizenshuu EX? I rest my case.
But I won’t. I haven’t sharpened my blade yet. I’ll save that for when they do the RRB episode. ^_^
nu vrem sa fiu asa powerpuff Z vrem sa fiu : blossom+boomer butch+bubbles brick+buttercup
The girls are supposed to sound like their thirteen-year-old seventh graders, not seven-year-old second graders! Overall, I kinda liked it though, it was sorta funny, the only thing that really pissed me off was the voices. I mean, even the original Buttercup’s voice wasn’t that annoying! And this Buttercup sounds like she has anger-management issues! (Even though she did in the japanese version, but it wasn’t THAT exaggerated!) And Bubbles’ voice is supposed to be soft and gentle, not squeaky!!! I think the voices are supposed to be cheap knockoffs of the OPPG. But seriously how old are these girls supposed to be? I just hope that our version DOES NOT sound like this, and if it does, then I’ll know how all of the Naruto fans felt when they realized that their precious characters got @#$%* voices when it aired in the U.S. *SIGH*
this really dissapointed me the took out the opening song which i love and the music isnt good. they buctherd the transformation scene whats the point of saying there names twice and i love the idea of rolling buble and so on. the voices arent that great but it just one episode if you watch more i guess you can get use to it. also something i really dont like is how there real names are blossom bubbles and buttercup that just ruins the whole secret identity thing. i gove the dub a c-
Meh.
Production value? What’s that?
I remember thinking that the Japanese version seemed a bit rushed. No longer. This is rushed.
