According to Moonphase Diary, Kobayashi Ritz’s mahjong manga「咲-Saki-」is confirmed to receive a TV anime adaptation in 2009. The announcement originally comes from this year’s 24th issue of seinen manga magazine Young GanGan. Staff and cast details may be found below…

*Description courtesy of Baka-Updates:
Miyanaga Saki is a high school freshman who doesn’t like mahjong. Ever since she was a child, she would lose her New Year’s gift money during her family mahjong game. If she won, her parents would be upset, and if she lost, well, she lost.
-
As a result, she’s learned to play in such a way that her score always remains plus/minus zero: not good enough to win, but not bad enough to lose. When we meet her, she’s being dragged to her school’s mahjong club by an old friend. How will a girl who hates mahjong, yet has become adept at the game as a result of her upbringing, survive in this environment?

Cute character design…
Wow, it’s the Manabi straight version of Akagi.
Moe Mahjong!!!
but but but…Gonzo @@
moe akagi. that’s all I have to say. not that I have a problem with that :P
strange to see gonzo doing this one, but I guess after strike witches, they realized this could potentially be another new source of income.
I never thought this would become an anime but I can see why gonzo picked it up. The manga feels fairly serious but I can see the anime having a total moemoe direction.
agree with dr_f ^^ theres alot of moe to go aroudn in the manga but i hoe gonzo will do the serious parrts! ^_^!! i cant wait, saki is super intense
Very interesting. Thanks
I wanted to see it adapted. However, I DID NOT WANT TO SEE IT ADAPTED BY GONZO. O god… The manga is simple, and I hope they stick to it. Anime original is okay once in a while, but with gonzo, they always seem to bastardize the production for incomprehensible reasons leaving the story dismembered and mutilated. Gonzo has done some decent works, but the majority of adaptations I’ve seen from them is… disappointing, so lets hope that they can stick to the source, rather than going through their usual motions by contriving a convoluted plot (It’s incredibly likely they’ll do so, seeing as the manga isn’t even that far) :(
Judging from the character designs at the official website… I think it’s safe to assume that the story will be mutilated. For goodness sake, Saki looks drunk! And the artwork reminds me of an anime that is a lot faster-paced than the speed that is set in the original manga - cutting corners and all story-wise, and lightning quick, jerky movements from the characters.
