I’m calling this “episode 0″ since this was an OAD special from the limited-edition 6th volume of the manga. The first “official” episode of the Second Term OVA series isn’t due out until February 20th — which will have a running time of 55-minutes. So with that out of the way, this special adapts the “Kuro-chan and Shiro-chan” story from the original manga. So as you can guess, it was made for Kuro fans, like me, and is packed with plenty of cute Kuro moments! It may not have the production value of an OVA, but it was still quite entertaining and made you want more in the end.
The story basically revolves around the life of Shirai-sensei and how Kuro’s hand in friendship helped her deal with the issues that trouble her today. As for Kuro herself, she longs for a female adult figure that she can look up to, since her own mother is never around as much due to her own business affairs. There was even a moment where Kuro gave Shirai-sensei a white (shiroi) hairpin. Kuro would carry a matching black (kuroi) one — hence the names. There was however a misunderstanding later on where Kuro would reveal to Shirai that she was in love with another girl. Shirai would tell her to just act “normal” around her. Kuro took this the wrong way, thinking she was strange and as a result, parted ways with Shirai. But in the end, Shirai saw how someone who hasn’t dated in 30 years like her could judge whether someone was “normal” or not.
During an assembly, Shirai decided to wear the white hairpin that Kuro gave to her. Kuro has happy to have noticed it and immediately wore her black one. However, two young boys were poking fun at Shirai saying how an old hag like her could possibly think wearing a decorative hair accessory like that could look good on her. A furious Kuro violently took care of the matter. As Shirai witness the confrontation, she began to wonder what sort of person she might have turned out if she had a supporting friend like Kuro growing up.
So yeah, this was a sweet episode. It made me like Shirai a lot after watching it. I can only hope that once this new OVA series is done with, there will be even more Kojika anime to look forward to in the near future.
