The official 「CANAAN」 website has announced that a 3-film condensed version of the 13-episode TV series will be underway this October in Japanese theaters.

Your usual anime is 22.5 minutes per episode, meaning that 13 episodes is a bit less than 5 hours.
They don't have to “condense” anything to fit it into 3 films. They could just show the thing back to back.
Turning to movies, seems like the trend with anime nowadays.
