According to this year’s 35th issue of Weekly Young Magazine, a new anime series based off Shigeno Shuichi’s action-drama manga, 「Initial D」, has been green-lit for production. Details of the forthcoming project will be revealed in the next issue of the magazine — on sale August 6th.
The long-running franchise has had several TV anime series since its broadcast debut in April 19th, 1998. It has also inspired a full-length live action film, gaming line, and other anime related products.
[UPDATE 08.02.2012] – The new series will begin November 2012.

Only the fearless survive in the white-hot world of street racing, as teams take on dangerous roads in the shadow of Mt. Akina. Behind the wheel of the mysterious “Ghost of Akina” is Takumi, on his way to becoming the greatest racer ever.
